Why was Maya determined to marry, even at a young age in the novel, The You I’ve Never Known?

As a sixteen year-old girl, Maya was anxious to escape her lunatic Scientologist mother, and she believed marriage was the way out. Thus, she chose to pursue twenty-seven year-old Jason. Maya soon became pregnant and the couple married, but Jason's drinking, abusive behavior, and controlling nature soon began to tear apart the marriage.
