The Yellow House
How does the author present the French Quarter in the memoir, The Yellow House?
.
.
The French Quarter, the famous historical part of New Orleans that is the central hub of its tourism, represents the mythologized New Orleans that is presented to the rest of the world as a city full of history, fun-loving residents, and big parties. It is the idealized version of the city that tourists experience but that does reflect the everyday reality of most of its citizens. In the first part of the book, Sarah and some of her siblings travelled to the French Quarter to work in cafes and restaurants. These events demonstrate how the tourist experience is upheld and served by residents who live elsewhere in more challenging circumstances. When Sarah returned to New Orleans in 2011, she lived in the French Quarter, symbolizing the start of a new relationship to her hometown.
