Where had Murph been before he went in the Army?

Before Murph went in the army, he had probably never been more than five miles from his mother. He might have been seven miles if you counted the three months that he worked in the Shipp Mountain Mine after he graduated from the Bluefield Vocational and Technical School. Before he went in the Army he had never been away from home.
