What was Bartle's life like at the beginning of Chapter 9?

By the time autumn came, Bartle was settled in an apartment in the old gasworks building at the edge of the river. His only companionship was a stray tortoiseshell cat that would occasionally sleep in the flower box below his window. Sometimes he would cross the footbridge to the city to buy beer or a box of frozen potpies.
