In Chapter 7, why did Bartle join the army?

Bartle joined the army because he had wanted to be a man. People had made fun of him and pushed him around in the cafeteria and the hallways in high school because he liked to read books and poems. He thought if he went in the army, he would be a man and no one would make fun of him.
