What is the main conflict in Year of Impossible Goodbyes by Sook Nyul Choi?

The novel's main conflict can be found in the Japanese occupation of Korea and their subsequent oppression of the Korean people. As a result, Korea splits apart.... North Korea becomes a communist country, and South Korea remains free. Over the course of the story, we see the family's eventual escape, as well as their participation in the Korean Independence Movement.
