Josalyn's baby symbolizes obsession. Not long after meeting Josalyn through Illuminations Mental Health, Winnie becomes overly involved in her life. Then when she discovers Josalyn is pregnant, Winnie's priorities shift to the child. Determined to keep Josalyn from raising the child on the streets, Winnie ultimately kidnaps and kills the baby. The author uses the child to illustrate the ways in which good intentions might sour if the individual is unable to perceive their distorted investments in another's life.
