Who is Sammy in the novel, The Wrong End of the Telescope?

Sammy is Sumaiya’s husband and another refugee with whom Mina interacts during her stay in Lesbos. He is attentive to Sumaiya during her illness, and Sumaiya chooses to spend her last moments alive with him. While at Moria, Sammy is interviewed by two journalists who laud him for his decision to leave Syria with his family to save his daughter Asma from a forced marriage. This attitude, which implies that other men of his culture would not have done the same, perplexes Sammy and draws outrage from Mazen.
