Francine is Mina’s wife, who lives with her in Chicago. Francine and Mina met in medical school and appear to have a strong and stable relationship. Mina’s journey to Lesbos appears to have been at least partly inspired by Francine’s belief that the trip would be good for her because she has seemed bored recently, which hints both at the strength of their relationship and the ways in which it may need attention. Towards the end of the novel, after Mina has assisted in Sumaiya’s suicide, Francine tells her that she looks happy and asks her to come home. Francine is a Black American, and Mina references her experiences as a marginalized person in the medical industry.
