How did the island of Manhattan get its name as noted in the nonfiction book, The World Turned Upside Down: Indian Voices from Early America?

According to the book, a missionary named John Heckewelder provides an account of the Dutch meeting Manhattan Island Indians, and then plying them with alcohol. The island became known as Manhattan, "the place where intoxication happens."
