Proteus and Triton are two ancient Greek gods that appear in the final two lines of the poem. Proteus is known in Greek mythology as the god of rivers and seas, and for having the ability to alter his shape, much like the liquidity of water. Triton, meanwhile, is known as the messenger of the seas. In the poem, the speaker describes Proteus as rising from the sea and describes Triton as blowing his horn. Both gods symbolize the divine power of nature.
