Modern society as a whole is treated as a nameless and faceless character in the poem, specifically in the first eight lines. The speaker characterizes modern society as industrious and greedy, always “getting and spending” (2). Furthermore, society does not value nature enough because it is unable to see it as anything other than a source for profit, and is unable to perceive the way in which a relationship with nature is spiritually fulfilling as opposed to monetarily rewarding. As a whole, modern society, according to the speaker, is out of balance with the natural world.
