Religious Taoism institutionalized a system that accommodated fortune telling, soothsaying, shamans, and faith healers. It took shape in the second century A. D. and formalized itself with a religious hierarchy. Although it appears on the surface to be a conglomeration of superstition, it must be remembered that, like the other two forms of Taoism, its purpose is to draw te from the cosmos.
