"People's attitudes to me had shifted with the swelling of my belly and that in turn made my own feelings about the unborn child more difficult to deal with . . . At times, I had the feeling that what I carried inside me was not a baby at all, but Achilles himself, miniaturized, reduced to the size of a homunculus, but still identifiably Achilles" (18).
