The Bastille prison was torn apart by Revolutionists during the French Revolution. At the chateau, Adrienne states, "There was pride, though, in Chavaniac, with its liberty capstone over the door" (361). The capstone mentioned was fashioned from a Bastille stone gifted to Lafayette after the prison was torn down. Lafayette prompted the Revolution, so the stone symbolizes his work for equality and a constitution.
