Although he is an American, Victor fights with the French during WW1. He wears the tricolor of blue, white, and red that was chosen at the Revolutionary cockade during Lafayette's time (288). Victor presents the pin as a gift to a deceased soldier's son, Uriah Kohn (251). Victor tells Uriah that by holding the pin, the boy's father will be with him (251). For Uriah, the tricolor represents many things - the standard symbol of revolution and justice, his father's presence, and Victor's presence, who he views as a superhero.
