Why does Connor lie about Frankie's service in Vietnam in the book, The Women: A Novel?

Although Connor is proud of the service his male family members engage in, he is not proud when Frankie enlists. He does not believe women should go into war zones. He is so ashamed of her service that he tells everybody that she is studying in Florence rather than in Vietnam.
