Barb is Black, and one reason she went to Vietnam was so that Black soldiers could see a Black nurse. She is involved in the struggle for civil rights even during her time in Vietnam, as she puts up posters of Civil Rights heroes in her hooch. After the war, she continues to fight for civil rights.
