The McGrath Estate, Frankie’s childhood home, is fenced in to try to protect from the outside world. In addition, Connor McGrath has a heroes’ wall where he keeps photographs of all the men in their family who served in the military. The women in the family have wedding photos on the wall because Connor believes women act heroically by putting up with their husbands. When Frankie returns from war, she no longer believes she fits into her childhood bedroom because it is the room of someone whose life is laid out for them and follows a predictable pattern that culminates in marriage and motherhood.
