Monk’s Piece is the house where Arthur lives with his wife, Esmé, and her children, in their old age. Arthur enjoys the seclusion and privacy of the house. His boss, Mr Bentley, helped him buy it, since he feels responsible for Arthur’s trauma. Monk’s Piece represents Arthur’s rejection of society in the winter of his life.
