Hannah’s bruises are symbols of Seth’s abusive nature. Thursday is concerned about Hannah when she first sees the bruises that appear to have been caused by a handgrip on Hannah’s arm. Hannah admits that her husband has a temper, something to which Thursday has never been exposed. It is only when Thursday angers Seth by asking him about the baby’s death that Seth pushes Thursday, causing her to fall, and then leaves the house as if nothing happened.
