What is Pausert's conflict in the novel, The Witches of Karres?

Over the course of the novel, Pausert must decide whether to return to his dull native world of Nikkeldepain with its self-absorption, or to remain in Karres, a world peopled by galactic-minded odd birds with a gift for finding dangerous tasks and staying with them.
