When Ivy House is first introduced, it appears as an enchanting fairytale refuge from the mundane urban world which Toby is leaving. Ivy House then becomes the site of a major murder investigation when Dominic's skull is discovered inside the wych elm in the backyard garden. After this moment, Ivy House becomes more hostile to its inhabitants. After Hugo's death, Ivy House falls into disrepair. At the end of the novel, Ivy House is sold to pay for Toby's trial and treatment.
