Names in the novel are symbolic of character traits of some of the characters. Jack’s last name is Masterson, and this is symbolic of the way in which he is the mastermind of all that happens on the island and ultimately of making the dreams of his contestants come true. Lucy’s last name is Hart, and this symbolizes the degree to which she believes love is the most important trait a mother can show. It also symbolizes how love is what she has been looking for for most of her life.
