What is an example of symbolism in the novel, The Wise Women?

The author uses the stuffed shark as a symbol of Jonah’s special needs. Jonah is a very intelligent child, but he also deals with a high level of anxiety. One day he takes this shark with him to day camp because he believes it will protect him. Clementine believes he takes the shark because he is being bullied.
