Who is Mother from Winter Room and what is their importance?

Eldon's mother is never named, but rather, referred to as Mother throughout the book. Mother works hard keeping the house clean and her family fed. She is proud of her housekeeping, as is evident by her careful decoration of the dining room, which nobody is allowed to disturb.
