What is worrying King Uther in the opening pages of the book, The Winter King: A Novel of Arthur?

Uther, as the novel opens, is apprehensive about the birth of a grandson, his last hope of leaving a legitimate heir. His son Mordred is killed in battle before the novel begins and Uther blames his illegitimate son, Arthur.
