What is "Quipus" in the novel, The Wine-dark Sea?

Quipus is a type of 'written' language used by the Peruvian Indians in general and Eduardo in particular. A quipus consists of a mass of knotted strings and strips of cloth. The types and positions of the knots record the words and the message is encoded as a security measure.
