What happened to Samuel's father on Kristallnacht in the novel, The Wind Knows My Name?

Rudolph, Samuel's father, had been visiting his non-Jewish friend, Peter, on Kristallnacht. When the attacks began, he tried to hurry home to protect his family, but he was badly beaten before he reached his home. He was transferred from the hospital to the concentration camp Dachau where he died of a brain contusion.
