Cynara is given a collection of letters that once belonged to Lady. By reading these letters, Cynara learns that Lady was in love with her cousin and that both Lady and her cousin had a grandmother who was black. Cynara is surprised to learn that the cousin was willing to marry Lady despite their shared black ancestry.
