What does the fire symbolize in the novel, The Wife Upstairs?

The fire is a symbol of love and sacrifice. Eddie lights the fire to try to save Jane from Bea, while Bea runs into the fire to save Eddie. Both Eddie and Jane sacrifice their own safety for the people they love.
