The Raveneau wine symbolizes Richard’s attempts to embarrass Vanessa. He had Emma order the wine on one credit card but then canceled the order so that Vanessa would have to admit in front of his colleagues at their cocktail party that there was no wine in their cellar. He knew that his colleagues would assume that Vanessa had drunk all of the wine. The wine also represents the fact that makes Emma believe Vanessa’s story that Richard canceled the wine order in order to embarrass Vanessa. Emma checked the receipts for the credit card on which Richard said he reordered the wine but there was no charge for wine.
