Joe’s death symbolizes the complicated nature of Joan’s newfound independence and empowerment. Joe died of a heart attack soon after Joan said that she wished to end her relationship with him. Due to Joan’s long history with Joe, as well as possible lingering feelings of love/devotion, Joan mourned for Joe. However, she also took strength in her newfound independence and empowerment.
