What is Joe's relationship with Melinda in the novel, The Wife?

Melinda was a young woman whom Joan and Joe employed as a babysitter after they had their first child. Joe had an affair with Melinda. Like all of Joe’s affairs, Joan was aware of it and was emotionally hurt by it, but she never confronted Joe about it.
