Cyrus’ mother, at first cordial and accepting, begins to show her true controlling qualities when Perveen moves into the Sodawalla home in Calcutta. She is intent on teaching the young Perveen how to cook even though Perveen shows no true interest or talent in it. She worries about social and cultural acceptance and expects Perveen to act in a particular way. When Perveen shows her free-spirited ways, Behnoush uses condescending tones and guilt to get her to acquiesce.
