What causes Robert's break-up with Clara in the novel, The Widower’s Tale?

Clover had given a ring to Robert when he was younger because they loved each other very much, and she wanted him to have something to symbolize their affection. Robert cherishes the ring for emotional reasons, and he ends his relationship with Clara after she finds it and refuses to remove it from her finger.
