How does the author use symbolism in the novel, The Wicked King?

Jude's stuffed animals serve as symbols of her life in the mortal world before Madoc brought her to the magical realm. She doesn't take her stuffed animals when she leaves Madoc's home, but when Taryn brings them to her, she sees them as symbols of her vulnerability and burns them all.
