The chapter’s final line, "Eight months later, I slit Mr. Ashok's throat," functions on two levels: first, to draw the reader into the next chapter (and the remainder of the book) and also to foreshadow the events of the book’s climax. At this point, the reader is curious to know what events led to killing Mr. Ashok.
