Hoja uses the analogy between viewing his external self and observing the interior of his mind to search for the latter. He wants to establish relationships with other scientist from around the world so he could share what he had discovered about the insides of our heads. Hoja's obsession with the insides of our heads plays a role in his cruel interrogations during the war, because he uses innocent villagers to search for that inner landscape.
