North sets the action on the rise right away with Tom’s letter to Jake. The reader knows from the content of this letter the important things that he should look out for in the novel. North moves on to give exposition about child abductions and describe George’s abduction of Neil. Exposition is then given about Tom and Jake’s reason for moving to Featherbank.
The action continues to rise through Collins’ visit to Tom’s house, Jake’s almost abduction, Tom’s discovery of the skeleton in the garage, and Tom and Pete’s reunion.
