The Packet of Special Things represents both a paradox, and a source of comfort. The Packet is a paradox because Tom believes his son, even though he is only six, deserves a certain amount of privacy. It is only after Jake has been abducted that Tom looks at what his son has put in this Packet. He not only understands why Jake wanted to live in that particular house in Featherbank but also understands the - of Jake’s imaginary friend. Jake takes his Packet of Special Things everywhere he goes, somewhat like a comfort blanket or toy.
