The story takes place entirely in an unnamed church in New York City. Mrs. Dabney and Mr. Ellenwood are both residents of New York City, with the only exception being the years that Mrs. Dabney spent living in Charleston with her second husband. Dabney and Ellenwood have their wedding ceremony in this church. The narrator is aware of the church’s location, but he does not know if the church currently standing there is the same physical building in which the wedding took place decades earlier.
