Mrs. Foster’s grandchildren serve as a symbol of Mrs. Foster’s hope for a better life. Her grandchildren live in Paris, and she lives in New York, thus, throughout the story, her primary objective is to see her grandchildren in Paris. When she finally succeeds in visiting them, she is at peace.
