What is the significance of having each character introduce themselves by identifying a specific image in Section 1?

The images serve to identify the children as fairly young while they also serve to hint at their individuality, which proves to be a very significant topic throughout the novel. As such, we are given a quick glimpse into each character's childhood personality, which it would be prudent to hold on to as one continues to read the text.
