The reader should look at which events in this section seem to affect the children most deeply because in this way the reader will have an understanding of what to expect from the characters or what to compare against the characters as the novel progresses. Bernard displays his compassion, Jinny her fascination for material objects and sensations, Louis his insecurity because of his accent, Neville's fragility, Rhoda's fear of the unknown, and Susan's early disconnect from the other characters.
