On the whole, the characters display a fair amount of negative attitudes towards the counterparts. Although Bernard does at one point praise Neville for his ability to be exact, the characters do not express much appreciation for each other before Percival arrives. Louis is described as difficult by Neville, while Louis expresses fear of Susan.
