In contrast to Section 4, the characters are not at ease as they gather for dinner in Section 8. There is an obvious amount of tension within the group, and each character seems to express it in a particular way. Each of the characters bring up negative emotions, Bernard loses his ability to articulate his thoughts, Neville thinks on Percival's death, Louis remembers how inferior he often felt while in school, Rhoda's fearfulness almost boils over, and Jinny is entirely uninterested.
