While Neville and Bernard both show an appreciation for literature and some mutual respect in Section 3, they tend to have different attitudes towards themselves. As the reader encounters Bernard in this section, he is struggling to write a letter to a girl he loves. However, his self-doubt and anguish over his abilities as a writer prevent him from completing it.
