As he appears in Section 3, Bernard seems to express an amount of jealousy towards Louis, while also maintaining a level of respect for him. Louis is the only of the three boys not to attend university, despite the fact that he was always the best scholar of the boys. This perplexes Bernard, as it reinforces his feelings of inferiority and his perceived lack of ability as an artist. Bernard recognizes that Louis, more than himself and Neville, is comfortable with his place in life, despite that it does not fit the expectations he might have had of Louis when they were younger.
