Woolf seems to indicate in Section 2 that the characters are becoming more self-aware. This is linked specifically to the fact that the characters have split up, with the boys in one school and the girls in another. Unlike in Section 1, the characters now express themselves directly. In the prior section, the characters were only developed by way of their fears, which they did not fully understand, or through the thoughts of other characters.
